Acne

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when the hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. The sebaceous glands, located at the base of the hair follicles, produce sebum (oil) to keep the skin moisturized. When excess sebum production combines with dead skin cells, it can block the hair follicles and create an environment for bacteria to grow. This leads to inflammation and the development of different types of acne lesions such as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, or cysts.

Treatment Options:

  • Topical Treatments: Topical treatments, such as retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or antibiotics, are commonly used to treat mild to moderate acne. These products help unclog the pores, reduce inflammation, kill bacteria, and promote skin cell turnover.

  • Oral Medications: For more severe cases of acne, oral medications, including antibiotics, hormonal therapies (such as birth control pills), or isotretinoin (Accutane), may be prescribed. These medications help control bacterial growth, hormonal fluctuations, or regulate oil production.

  • Chemical Peels: Chemical peels involve applying a chemical solution to the skin to exfoliate the outer layers and promote cell turnover. This can help improve acne by unclogging pores, reducing inflammation, and minimizing post-inflammatory pigmentation.

  • Laser and Light Therapies: Laser and light therapies can target acne-causing bacteria and reduce inflammation. These treatments can be beneficial for individuals who do not respond well to traditional therapies or have persistent acne. Lasers can also be used to treat pigmentation changes and scarring that has resulted from acne.

  • Extraction: In-office manual extraction of blackheads and whiteheads can be performed to remove stubborn or deeply embedded comedones.

  • Lifestyle and Skincare Modifications: Making certain lifestyle changes, such as avoiding excessive touching or picking at the skin, using non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) skincare products, and adopting a consistent skincare routine, can help manage and prevent acne breakouts.
