Rosacea
Rosacea is a common skin disorder characterized by persistent redness, flushing, and the development of small blood vessels on the face. Some individuals can develop acne-like pimples or overgrowth of oil glands on top of the redness. The exact cause of rosacea is still unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Triggers such as sunlight, heat, spicy foods, alcohol, and stress can exacerbate symptoms and lead to flare-ups.
Treatment Options:
Topical Medications: Topical treatments, such as metronidazole, azelaic acid, or ivermectin creams, can help reduce redness and inflammation associated with rosacea. These medications are applied directly to the affected areas and are often used as a first-line treatment for mild to moderate rosacea.
Oral Medications: In more severe cases of rosacea, oral antibiotics, such as doxycycline or minocycline, may be prescribed to control inflammation and reduce acne-like bumps. Oral isotretinoin may be considered in rare cases.
Laser Therapy: Laser treatments, such as pulsed dye laser (PDL), can help reduce facial redness and treat visible blood vessels.
Avoidance of Triggers: Identifying and avoiding triggers that worsen rosacea symptoms is essential. Keeping a diary to track triggers and making lifestyle adjustments, such as protecting the skin from sun exposure and managing stress levels, can help minimize flare-ups.
Skincare Modifications: Using gentle, non-irritating skincare products and avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive exfoliants can help maintain the skin's barrier function and prevent further irritation. Our dermatology experts can help you develop an ideal skincare regimen.
