Vitiligo

Vitiligo occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin which is the pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes. This results in the depigmentation of the skin. The exact cause of vitiligo is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, autoimmune, and environmental factors. The choice of treatment depends on the severity of the condition and the individual's specific needs:

Topical treatments:

  • Topical calcineurin inhibitors, such as tacrolimus or pimecrolimus, are non-steroidal medications that can be used to reduce inflammation and promote repigmentation in vitiligo patches.

Phototherapy:

  • Narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy helps reduce the inflammation associated with vitiligo. Individuals interested in the treatment can come 2 or 3 times a week to our dermatology clinic to have it administered. The best part?
